JCI Area C Conference?"Where it all began?"

In Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on May 1-4, 2002, approximately 700 Junior Chamber members from 32 countries gathered for this year?s Area C Conference. Thanks to the able chairmanship of JCI Executive Vice President Lars Hajlund, and the effective and intensive efforts of Conference Director Alberto Alvarez and his team, the 2002 Area C Conference was a great success. Several past JCI officers attended the Conference, including 1990 JCI President Jorge Suncar from the Dominican Republic and 1991 JCI President Reginald Shaumans from Belgium. Under the theme Where it all began, the Conference offered delegates exceptional opportunities for professional training, personal growth, business networking, sightseeing, and international fellowship. Opening Ceremony Dominican Republic President Hip?lito Mej?a attended the Opening Ceremony and welcomed all delegates. Nearly 30 chief delegates marched to the stage of the magnificent Eduardo Brito Hall of the Teatro Nacional, which was completely full with approximately 1,500 attendees including delegates and guests.
After the President?s speech, guests enjoyed a colorful folkloric ballet presentation by Josefina Mini?o depicting the arrival of Spanish conquistadors to the Americas in 1492. Outstanding Young People from the Dominican Republic, recognized during the ceremony, delivered uplifting speeches. The mayor of Santo Domingo presented the keys of the city to JCI President Salvi Batlle and to JCI Executive Vice President and Conference Chairman Lars Hajslund. Conference Chairman Lars Hajslund and Conference Director Alberto Alvarez motivated and inspired delegates with their speeches. President Batlle, highlighting the Conference theme, Where it all began, pointed out that the founder of Junior Chamber in the Dominican Republic, Luis Sanchez Noble, was attending the ceremony. A delightful dance closed the ceremony, formally launching the 2002 Area C Conference. International Fellowship Delegates were delighted to be able to make friends with fellow members from practically every country in the Americas, as well as from other countries, including Catalonia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Japan, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Tunisia. The Coral Hamaca Hotel The Conference also provided superb accommodations. The headquarters hotel was the Coral Hamaca, just minutes from the international airport of Las Americas and a half-hour drive from Santo Domingo. Delegates enjoyed the Coral Hamaca?s tranquil white sand beach on Boca Chica Bay. At the Coral Hamaca, delegates found a wide range of activities and sports, including golf and scuba diving, casino and nightlife. The delegates? children enjoyed the fully-equipped Kid's Club, nintendo, mini football, playground and supervised pool activities.
