Create Your Recycling Box

University students, JCI members and member candidates, the young working or taking active part in business life.
Recycling, as a term, is the conversion of waste products into new materials. This prevents waste of potentially useful materials, reduces the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduces energy usage, reduces air pollution and water pollution by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production. The consumption ruins the natural balance less and we can stop polluting the nature. In addition When new products are manufactured from the raw material obtained from recycled products, it saves a lot of energy which is consumed for the production. To give an example, Additionally, recycled aluminium saves 35% of the energy from primary aluminum production. Using waste materials as raw materials is important for stopping environmental pollution. Using scrap paper for producing paper again can reduce air pollution to %74-94, water pollution to %35 and water pollution to %45. For example, adding a ton of paper to pulp can prevent cutting 20 trees. Also, recycling makes a huge contribution to the economy. The economic value of 3 million recyclable waste materials is about 100 trillion dollars. The consumption rate of paper, plastic and metal increases according to the population and the variety of the needs. This causes deforestation. The raw materials needed to make most plastics come from petroleum and natural gas and coal. When you throw out plastic, it doesn’t degrade and persist for hundreds or even thousands of years, causes water and land pollution. The plastic consumption per person is about 50 kg. The carbon footprint is a measurement of all greenhouse gases we individually produce and has units of tonnes (or kg) of carbon dioxide equivalent. A carbon footprint can be measured for an individual or an organization, and is typically given in tons of CO2-equivalent (CO2-eq) per year. It means the damage which is caused by the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use Calculating carbon footprint is a study prepared to measure the damage we give to the planet as an individual. It allows to measure the amount of CO2. It is essential to make young people aware of the natural facts and how s/he can affect the world in positive or negative way even as an individual. They can be aware of this by measuring their carbon footprints. The target group of the project is the university students, JCI membets and young people in business life. By the help of this project, young people learned about the consumption, production and recycling of plastic and metal. They also became conscious about what they can do about recycling and shared this with their connections. This caused the reduction of the consumption of paper, plastic and metal in their daily life. The foreign partner of the project is Young Effect Association, established by the young in Magenta, Italy. YEO is a non-governmental organization. While carrying out the project, the attendants from YEO came to Antalya and stayed for a week. Getting together enabled sharing ideas about recycling awareness, personal consumption and getting to know different cultures. Thus, young people of the same age observed the awareness and the attempt they make and could contribute their personal development. This helped strengthening the understanding between the young in different countries and emboldening European collaboration about the young.
During the themed meeting in our association, we observed that both our members and candidate members place emphasis on recyling. However, they do not have the necessary knowledge about what to do. Young people at Mediterrenean University who attended our training about preparing a business plan mentioned that enough material is not supported for recyling. They also acknowledged that they cannot find enough awareness-raising advertisement in the neighbourhood. They also brought up that because of the school life a myriad of paper is consumed in photocopy rooms most of which is unnecessary and is never used for recyling. Moreover in their daily life, they do not recyle the ‘litter’ they ‘produce’ which comes as a resul of viands. The young who are new at business life cannot raise the consciousness of consuming less paper, and they consume more paper in business life. The young who do not use the pros provided by the technology consciously or unconsciously damage the environment during their business lives. In addition, there are recycling boxes in Turkey in order to collect waste materials. These boxes are prepared by Protecting Environment and Recycling Waste Materials Foundation (ÇEVKO). These boxes are rectangular, deep boxes which have an international ‘green spot’ recycling symbol. These boxes are not attractive enough for young people. Young people do not know much about calculating carbon footprint. This shows that young people are not aware of the harm they cause for the environment. But a conscious person can see that he can change a lot of things. Use of newspaper, magazines, brochures, advertisement, and some stationery equipment increases the waste material. Consciousness-raising activities are very crucial for reducing consumption at companies using technology. Our project sparked by observing the need for recycling. Young people at university became aware of recycling. By the help of this project, We could attribute to JCI’s target ‘Enacting our senses of community improvement’
We asked our partner’s opinion when they went back home. They sent us the following evaluation writing: CREATE YOUR RECYCLING BOX “Remembrance from Italian participants” After we knew about the project “Create your recycling box”, to better understand the theme of recycling, we went to the ASM company, which takes care of collection and garbage disposal in Magenta. The project was welcomed with excitement and the company made available for us all of its competence, let us trying in first person what it means recycle. We were also well accomodated by Turkish partners, who were worried to foot the bill of our week, from the airplane to the hotel. That was a very nice thing because in this way every young people can take part in that kind of project, in spite of economical problems. All the people of JCI were so kindly and helpful, and organised wonderful evening in which we made some stuff with recycling materials and we shown the presentation of our experience in Magenta, that involved actively all the participants. That moments, and also the intercultural evening where we shared Turkish and Italian music, contributed to create a joined group that, despite the distance, keep in touch through Internet. The project was a success because it involved physically and emotionally all the participants and it was advertised a lot, so in Magenta as in Antalya. We are satisfied about it because we dealt a theme that had an important relevance about the environment problems of the world. In that experience we integrated the work of recycle but also the amazing view, the natural place, the lovely people that we met in JCI organization, in the hotel and around Antalya. We can only say thanks for all the things that were made for us and invite all of our friends to visit our Italy, in the hope that we can offer the same incredible experience. ------------------------ By the help of this project, I had a vision. I feel lucky of taking part in this project team. I would like to thank JCI Antalya Administration who gave met his chance. I had a very pleasant time with the project team. Let’s do other projects :) Pınar Derya Doğruyol JCI Member ------------------------ The project was both informative and enjoyable. So glad I attended. I had fun during workshops and learned a lot. The recycling box at the dormitory is much more important for me from now on. I would like to thank JCI team preparing and conducting the project. I would love to take part in your other projects, too. Rukiye Akbalık Student at Mediterrenean University
