JCI and Nothing But Nets Visit Cameroon for Learning Trip

Early this month, JCI leadership and members traveled to Cameroon for a learning trip with Nothing But Nets to visit with community leaders, medical personnel and families affected by malaria. This year marks the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign’s 10th Anniversary in their fight to defeat the disease and expand efforts to deliver insecticide-treated bed nets and other critical malaria interventions to the most vulnerable populations in sub-Saharan Africa.

Trip participants included 2016 JCI President Paschal Dike, JCI Secretary General Arrey Obenson, UN Foundation representatives Elise Edwards, Kavita Sood, Margaret Reilly McDonnell and the 2013 JCI Nothing But Nets Trip Contest winners. Representatives from JCI Germany, JCI Netherlands and the 2013 top individual fundraiser Aaron Dyess, son of 2013 JCI USA National President Chrystal Ramsey, took part in the learning trip.

During the trip, participants visited the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) offices in Yaoundé and Douala to meet with doctors who support the national net distribution with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. They also learned about JCI Cameroon’s ongoing programs to educate local communities on malaria and methods for prevention.

“The learning trip to Cameroon strengthened my conviction that malaria like every other disease that has ravaged lives in human history, can be overcome by the collective action of dedicated stakeholders,” said JCI Secretary General Arrey Obenson.

The trip participants were given an in-depth look at the work being done as well as the progress that has been made over the past seven years through the JCI and Nothing But Nets partnership. The learning trip gave light to the work that still needs to be accomplished in order to reduce deaths and save lives.

For that reason, in 2016, JCI has pledged to send 30,000 nets to fulfill the Nothing But Nets Million Nets Pledge; a commitment to provide one million bed nets to protect refugees and families displaced by conflict in sub-Saharan Africa. The Million Nets Pledge, launched in 2015, is halfway to meeting its goal set for the end of this year. Thanks to a matching contribution from bed net manufacturer Sumitomo Chemical Corp., a donation of US $10 in 2016 will send not one but two bed nets.

The fight is far from over and it is through the efforts of JCI members worldwide that we will defeat malaria. Join JCI on our path to the Million Nets Pledge and help us eradicate malaria for good!
