2013 JCI European Conference
From 47 different countries, 2,749 delegates gathered in Monte Carlo, Monaco from May 29 to June 1. This large, dynamic group of JCI members and friends shared ideas and experiences related to creating sustainable impact in their communities and across Europe.
Starting Strong in Monaco
The Conference began with a lively Opening Ceremony, which included an inspiring welcome address from His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco. Believing in the power of JCI members to create positive change and take action in their communities, HSH is the honorary JCI Monaco President and is also a JCI Senator. Turning a portion of the ceremony to a more somber mood, delegates united in a moment of silence for the recent deaths of JCI members and leaders in Nigeria and Zimbabwe. It is in times of great tragedy that JCI members come together strong and united to support their fellow young active citizens. 2013 JCI Executive Vice President for Europe and Chairperson of the European Conference Lesley Young encouraged the delegates to make the most of their conference experience and open their minds to the discussions, workshops and programs to come.
The evening before the Opening Ceremony, Nothing But Nets Director Chris Helfrich and Nothing But Nets Partnership Associate Carolyn Commons hosted a reception for the European National Presidents. They kicked off the JCI Europe Buzzkill Challenge, involving the National Presidents to encourage their members to send nets and save lives throughout the Conference. The National Presidents meeting the following morning was very well attended. Each country shared some of their projects and plans along with discussing best practices with their Deputy National Presidents. This proved to be very beneficial and a great learning experience for all Chief Delegates. Right before the Opening Ceremony, the First Timers program drew a large, energetic crowd. First Timers received their passports and headed to Opening Ceremony feeling ready to start their JCI adventure in Monte Carlo.
Programs Promoting Positive Change
The next day began with the energetic JCI Morning Show, hosted by 2013 JCI Vice President Natalie Viselli and 2013 JCI UN Affairs Commissioner Robbert van Waart. Delegates were energized by the fun music and the “Minute to Win It” challenging 10 audience members to gather under a bed net in the shortest amount of time. At the JCI Active Citizen FrameWorkshop, delegates focused on community engagement and how to involve local partners to expand the impact of their projects.
The Nothing But Nets team along with the UN Affairs Commissioners joined JCI Trainer Stephen Bouman to facilitate an enlightening session about JCI and the UN as well as the post 2015 plan for the Millennium Development Goals. The JCI Debating Championship, including competitions in English, French and German, gave participants a chance to exercise their public speaking skills and to discuss the challenges and opportunities in their communities.
General Assemblies 1 and 2 were both very well attended. President Chiara encouraged delegates to donate to the Hope for Haiti Community Center project with a special thanks to JCI France for their generous support, donating US $10 000 to date. General Assembly 2 began with the JCI Public Speaking finals to decide who will represent Europe at the JCI World Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this November. The European National Presidents also agreed to create the “Young & Small Organizations Academy” to happen in Gothenburg, Sweden right after the 2013 European Academy.
Promoting socially responsible business practices, the Best Social Business Plan Competition hosted by the Cuomo Foundation awarded JCI members for their progressive business platforms. Tudor Tarlev from JCI the Netherlands won 20,000 € for Dreamups.org and Cignem Haznedar from JCI Turkey was awarded 15,000 € for his project, Manicare. The Conference programs concluded with the No Finish Line community engagement activity raising money and awareness for Fight Aids Monaco. Delegates then celebrated a successful Conference with an exhilarating Awards Ceremony and Gala.
