JCI Members Work with Chambers of Commerce

Numerous national and local JCI organizations enjoy excellent relations with their respective Chambers of Commerce. Their joint efforts benefit not only the members of the respective organizations, but also their communities. As a result of their collaboration, many excellent projects are launched or enhanced.

Increased interest in cooperation opportunities with the Chamber of Commerce has been reported this year. For example, in July, while visiting JCI Ecuador, JCI President Lars Hajslund, accompanied by JCI Ecuador members, visited the Chamber of Commerce of Quito.

“We discovered that there were many opportunities for cooperation,” said Hajslund. “Although there had not been much collaboration up to that point, I’m sure that after our meeting we will do a great deal of co-branding and co-sharing of ideas.”

Also in July, JCI Dublin President Mark Kelly and Dublin Chamber of Commerce President Eugene McCague signed a document of cooperation that will no doubt benefit both organizations.

"JCI Dublin and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce complement each other with JCI focusing on developing the individual and the Chamber of Commerce developing business,” said Kelly. “This agreement will help JCI Dublin grow and will give new opportunities to its members."

Some of the main points of the agreement between JCI Dublin and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce are:

-- JCI Dublin is a full member of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce
-- The president of JCI Dublin will sit on the board of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce
-- A member of the staff of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce will sit on the board of JCI Dublin to assist in the growth of JCI Dublin
-- As full members of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, JCI Dublin members will have access to all training and events run by Dublin Chamber of Commerce.
-- JCI Dublin and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce will publicize each other in there publications

2006 JCI Met Net: JCI Metropolitan Organizations Set to Grow

Leaders of local organizations in metropolitan areas in the United States and abroad gathered at the Sheraton Lakeside Chalet in St. Louis, MO, USA, June 30 - July 2, for the 2006 Metro Networking Conference (JCI Met Net). JCI and the JCI USA Metro committee hosted this conference, led by JCI Treasurer Lori Tomlin.

The objective of JCI Met Net was to provide opportunities for leaders of local organizations in metropolitan areas to fine tune skills to help their organizations develop and grow. Recognizing that local organizations in large cities need strategies and skills that are unique to them, attendees reviewed the best approaches and techniques, and shared ideas on how to achieve their goals.

As this meeting took place right after the JCI Executive Committee Meeting (MYE), JCI Met Net delegates had the opportunity to meet with JCI Executive Officers, most of whom had traveled from abroad for MYE. Leadership training was provided by outstanding speakers, including world renowned consultant Dr. Jeffrey Magee and JCI President Lars Hajslund.

On May 21, 2006, JCI Puerto Rico finalized plans to officially establish a metropolitan local organization in December this year. Sponsored by Universidad del Este de Puerto Rico, this new local organization will serve the City of Carolina, an important metropolis in Puerto Rico. The Luis Muños Marín international airport, the island’s largest airport, as well as dozens of beautiful hotels and tourist attractions are located in the area.

The creation of this new local organization is aligned with JCI President Lars Hajslund’s call for the establishment of new local organizations, preferably in metropolitan areas.

When asked what JCI Puerto Rico had done to set up this new organization, Jesús Soto, JCI Puerto Rico Public Relations Director, explained that the expansion program had begun in 2005, under the leadership of Immediate Past National President Eladio Martínez.

Monday Morning Messages
Teaching, Inspiring and Motivating Leaders

We must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it -- but we must sail, and not drift, not lie at anchor.
-- Oliver Wendell Holmes

As a coach of a basketball team of 4- and 5-year-old boys, I face some challenges that a coach of a professional basketball team does not. My players often ask me if they can leave the court to “go potty.” I spend a significant amount of time encouraging my players not to guard their own teammates when we have the ball. And I am constantly counting the number of players I have in the game, because several of them have a tendency to run to the bleachers during play to get a hug from “Mommy.”
