JCI European Academy Prepares Outstanding Local Presidents
The 11th JCI European Academy took place in Göteborg, Sweden, August 3-6, 2007, with 70 participants from 25 countries. Aspiring to become successful Local Presidents, attendees enjoyed this “once-in-a-lifetime learning experience” and had fun making new friends.

JCI World President Scott Greenlee and JCI Executive Vice President for Europe Graham Hanlon took part in the event. Representing the JCI World Headquarters, JCI Director for Europe Zsolt Fehér provided hands-on assistance.

The Academy aimed at increasing understanding and cooperation among future leaders from different countries. By creating a forum of representatives from all over Europe, the Academy offered the opportunity to exchange experiences, knowledge, ethics, culture and values.

Excellent Training

Academy participants received indoor and outdoor training in leadership, parliamentarian procedures, JCI Corporate Identity and programs, and insights into personal effectiveness. The Head Trainer for the indoor team was Katia van Belle while the head coach for the outdoor team was Dave Synaeve.

Fun and interactive, the Insights program provided participants with a common language and a framework for understanding themselves and others. It helped them discuss personality and preferences in a positive way, and to improve their interpersonal relationships.

“The leadership training, the outdoor day and the parliamentarian procedure elements of the program, including our cooperation partner's unique Insights Color analysis ‘turned around and touched the heart’ of all delegates,” reported Director Fehér, “and made them ready to fulfill leadership roles within the most important units of JCI — our local organizations.”

Objectives Achieved

The Academy accomplished its objectives, which included enhancing management development and increasing the understanding and cooperation among future leaders from various countries, promoting the creation of new networks, and supporting exchanges between Western and Eastern Europe.

Encouraging also long-term growth and the development of the JCI spirit in Europe, the Academy offered high level training to increase the professionalism of JCI local officers, which will also benefit those officers in their professional activities. Additionally, the Academy improved awareness of JCI Corporate Identity and programs.

“The JCI European Academy always was and continues to be one of the leading training events of JCI,” said Director Fehér. “Thanks to a dedicated COC and excellent indoor and outdoor training teams, this event created a unique learning environment for the future local presidents of Europe.”

Outstanding New Leaders

"I have no doubt that many of the participants of this year’s European Academy will go on to lead our Organization at the local level and beyond with great distinction," said JCI Executive Vice President Hanlon. “The magical mix of training, internationalism and camaraderie has yet again produced excellent leaders for JCI and the communities in which we serve.”

“I think everyone who was in Sweden this year, even those not involved in the training program, will take something very special away from this Academy,” added Hanlon. “I know I have."

JCI President Greenlee was also certain the Academy had trained excellent leaders. "The European Academy continues to be a great way for local organizations to prepare their future leaders to serve as effective Presidents,” he commented.

Recognizing the Academy organizers and trainers, Greenlee said, “JCI Sweden and the International Training Team should be once again commended as they have prepared 70 of our next local presidents for excellence. Every local organization in Europe should try to send their future leaders to the next European Academy."
