JCI Fukuoka Promotes Bid for 2016 Olympic Games
Considering the experience and reputation they gained by successfully organizing the 2004 JCI World Congress, JCI Fukuoka’s members will no doubt excel at promoting the hosting of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in their city.

Led by President Katsutoshi Koike, JCI Fukuoka members are promoting their city’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The internal bid will take place in late August this year. So far, the cities of Fukuoka and Tokyo are under consideration. With a population of 1.5 million, the City of Fukuoka is planning to present a concrete and efficient plan to face the competition – Tokyo, a mega city.

Under the theme “2016 Olympic Games in Fukuoka, Kyushu, Go for it!,” JCI Fukuoka’s 307 members are aggressively promoting the bid. As part of their promotional plan, they recently submitted 270,000 signatures from people in the area to the Japan Olympic Committee (JOC). To collect signatures, they conducted a bicycle relay from Fukuoka to Tokyo (approximately 1,200 km). More than 130 JCI Fukuoka members took turns riding bicycles.

JCI and the Olympic Movement

JCI’s mission and the goals of the Olympic Movement both seek to provide opportunities to young people. JCI’s mission is “to contribute to the advancement of the global community by providing the opportunity for young people to develop the leadership skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurship and fellowship necessary to create positive change.”

According to the Olympic Charter, established by Pierre de Coubertin, the goal of the Olympic Movement is “to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.”

Greater Opportunities

Through the 2016 Olympic Games, JCI Fukuoka members hope to provide greater opportunities to their young people. “We sincerely wish to give the best opportunities to our children by helping them witness the best performances of the world’s top athletes,” said Ko Omura from JCI Fukuoka. Thanks to their bold and passionate efforts, JCI Fukuoka members are apt achieve their goals.
