2006 JCI Met Net: JCI Metropolitan Organizations Set to Grow
Leaders of local organizations in metropolitan areas in the United States and abroad gathered at the Sheraton Lakeside Chalet in St. Louis, MO, USA, June 30 - July 2, for the 2006 Metro Networking Conference (JCI Met Net). JCI and the JCI USA Metro committee hosted this conference, led by JCI Treasurer Lori Tomlin.

The objective of JCI Met Net was to provide opportunities for leaders of local organizations in metropolitan areas to fine tune skills to help their organizations develop and grow. Recognizing that local organizations in large cities need strategies and skills that are unique to them, attendees reviewed the best approaches and techniques, and shared ideas on how to achieve their goals.

As this meeting took place right after the JCI Executive Committee Meeting (MYE), JCI Met Net delegates had the opportunity to meet with JCI Executive Officers, most of whom had traveled from abroad for MYE. Leadership training was provided by outstanding speakers, including world renowned consultant Dr. Jeffrey Magee and JCI President Lars Hajslund.

Learning from the Best

On Friday, June 30, participants attended Dr. Magee’s Local President's and Deputy President's Academy, as well as his Professional Training session. A Press Conference and Lunch followed. In addition to media, President Hajslund, JCI USA President Lisa Parrish, JCI Executive Committee members, and Local Presidents, attended this event.

In the afternoon, delegates enjoyed a city tour, including visits to the JCI World Headquarters, the gravesite of JCI’s founder Henry Giessenbier, and the legendary St. Louis Arch. Delegates also toured the Anheuser-Busch brewery. After an Opening Session and Networking with appetizers, they enjoyed a “Welcome to St Louis” social hosted by Anheuser-Busch.

On Saturday, delegates from JCI Tokyo, Japan; JCI Tempere, Finland; and JCI Seattle, USA, offered presentations on Outstanding Chapters. Delegates also discussed best practices and programs on roundtable discussions. After an International Etiquette Luncheon and a Metro Business Meeting, they learned about Corporate Sponsorships and Partnerships from JCI Executive Vice President Scott Greenlee, a Certified National Trainer (CNT); and the JCI Training program, The Successful Executive, from Michelle MacDonald, also a CNT.

Joe Alves, of Insights Learning & Development, spoke about “Transforming Team Effectiveness.” Insights, a leader in the field of people and organizational development, offers a wide range of unique and innovative learning solutions to transform individuals, teams and organizations.

Jumpstart Your Chapter

Patrick Knight, an International Graduate (IG), conducted a session on “Jumpstart Your Chapter - Metro Style.” If anyone knows how to jumpstart a local organization, that’s Patrick Knight, a practicing lawyer.

As president of JCI Coconut Grove, FL, USA, in 2001, Knight revolutionized his local organization, which had been languishing. Depicted as a “rising phoenix,” JCI Coconut Grove began to attract the most energetic and enthusiastic young people in the area, achieved a large membership increase, and was set on a path to success.

“We don’t force our people to do anything; we simply make our projects so interesting and fun that people want to come to them and get involved in planning them,” had said Knight in 2001. Having received numerous awards since 2001, JCI Coconut Grove continues to thrive by using its unique approach to creating young stars in the community.

Set to Grow

After gathering insights and learning from outstanding success stories, the 2006 JCI Met Net participants look forward to taking their metropolitan organizations to new heights, offering more opportunities than ever to an increasing number of young people.
