| JCI Executive Committee Reviews CSR Area Resolutions |
|
|
During the Midyear Executive Committee Meeting (MYE), JCI Executive Vice President Scott Greenlee reported on efforts related to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). He said that CSR had been discussed at the four 2006 JCI Area Conferences. As planned, JCI national presidents had drafted a CSR Area Resolution at each conference.
After reporting on the four CSR Area Resolutions, Greenlee reiterated that, at the JCI World Congress in Seoul, Korea, in November, delegates will discuss the four CSR Area resolutions and issue a final and consolidated JCI CSR Resolution to be implemented worldwide.
What is CSR?
Corporate and Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept that encourages companies to integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and in their interactions with their stakeholders on a voluntary basis.
CSR seeks to create prosperity, support social cohesion and preserve a healthy environment. It promotes economic, social and ethical responsibility, as well as the system of social market economy.
Specifically, CSR encourages voluntary actions that businesses can take, over and above compliance with minimum legal requirements, to address both their own competitive interests and the interests of wider society.
How did JCI become involved?
At the JCI World Congress in Vienna, Austria, in October 2005, JCI officers and several high-ranking political and business representatives signed the Vienna Treaty," which sets out Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a principle for conducting business. Thus, JCI began worldwide efforts to promote CSR.
"Through CSR actions taken at the national and local levels, we can be champions in this area," said JCI President Lars Hajslund in January 2006. JCI officers indicated that CSR projects can help members develop leadership skills, advance business success and prosperity in their communities, and gain public recognition for JCI.
During their 2006 January deliberations, JCI Executive Committee members decided to focus on CSR at the 2006 JCI Area Conferences and World Congress. Additionally, "JCI - Leading Corporate Social Responsibility" was chosen as the topic of the 2006 JCI Public Speaking World Championship.
Drafting JCIs CSR Resolution
Before this years JCI Conferences, National Presidents received a preliminary CSR Area Resolution, to which five proposals were to be added during workshops at each Conference. JCI Executive Vice President Scott Greenlee, responsible for CSR implementation in 2006, chaired the workshops.
At the JCI World Congress in Seoul, Korea, delegates will discuss all CSR Area resolutions. After deliberations, they will select five proposals and issue a final and consolidated JCI CSR Resolution.
After its ratified by General Assembly at Congress, the final JCI CSR Resolution will set the strategy for JCI members to promote CSR among small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as a means to train better leaders to create better communities worldwide.
