Help Indonesian Victims through JCI Operation Hope
JCI members worldwide have been saddened by the news that a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Java, near Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on Saturday, May 27. According a Social Ministry official, the earthquake killed more than 6,000 people, destroyed tens of thousands of homes, and left at least 130,000 homeless.

On behalf of JCI, I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this catastrophe. This earthquake is another blow to the country after the December 2004 tsunami, which killed more than 131,000 Indonesians. Fortunately, no deaths or injuries have been reported among JCI Members.

As an international organization that believes “the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations” and “service to humanity is the best work of life,” JCI would like to provide as much help as possible. I extend a call to JCI members worldwide to assist through JCI Operation Hope.

JCI Operation Hope

Through JCI Operation Hope, officially launched in January 1, 2005, JCI members in countries affected by the tsunamis received assistance from JCI members from many other countries, as well as from other contributors, such as Dr. Dato Tan Hian Tsin. Donations were effectively used by JCI members to conduct projects that assisted tsunami victims, primarily children.

In January 2006, the JCI Board of Directors, considering the success of JCI Operation Hope in 2005 and the need to assist other areas facing disasters, approved a new Policy: “A permanent fund made up of donations from members and non-members shall be maintained to assist, through JCI members, the victims of natural or other disasters. The fund shall be administered by the Executive Committee.”

To donate, please visit the JCI Operation Hope page, http://www.jci.cc/jcioperationhope

We pray that JCI members in Indonesia were not directly harmed by these destructive forces and that the country overcomes this tragedy as soon as possible.
