Delegates from across the region embraced OMOIYARI and built partnerships for future positive impact.
Almost 3,800 JCI members gathered in Singapore to answer 2010 JCI President Roland Kwemain’s call for action on the “Impact of One.” 2010 JCI Executive Vice President and Conference Chairperson Kentaro Harada kicked off the event on June 3. Conference attendees launched into acquiring the tools and partnerships necessary to combine their skills for a greater, global change.
Training for Success With 32 JCI Official Courses offered by JCI Trainers, nearly 600 Conference delegates took advantage of opportunities to learn at the 2010 Asia-Pacific Conference. Like at the 2010 JCI Africa and Middle East Conference, there was a high demand for the JCI Corporate Social Responsibility course, with almost 60 JCI members attending the courses offered.
JCI Japan generously sends trainers to each Area Conference every year to hold trainings on OMOIYARI, which represents the concept of universal understanding, respect and acceptance. However, at home in their own Area, JCI Japan trainers offered four OMOIYARI courses for almost 250 Conference delegates. JCI Area Conferences offered a great opportunity to meet new friends and put the OMOIYARI spirit into practice. Attendees captured the spirit of understanding and collaboration throughout the Conference.
National Pride and Parties To build on this spirit, the 2010 Asia-Pacific Conference was host to an abundance of National Parties. JCI National Organizations showcased their history and culture while delegates built new friendships at total of 10 National Parties throughout the Conference. JCI host organizations included Hong Kong, India, Korea, Mongolia, Taiwan, Japan, Macao, Malaysia and the Philippines.
2010 JCI President Roland Kwemain praised the organizations, saying “I am very excited that we have members who are so proud of their culture that they want to share it with their fellow JCI members. This is a great opportunity for us all to learn and embrace each other for our similarities and our differences.” President Kwemain went on to stress the importance of harmony within the organization for working together to bring a positive impact to communities around the world.
Recognizing Excellence The JCI Awards Program at each Area Conference encourages positive change and teamwork through recognizing JCI organizations that have excelled in the past year. JCI India led the way, winning awards for Best Community Development Program, Best Business Development Program, Best Publication and Best Public Relations Program. Local Organizations in Japan also scored big with awards for Best UN MDG Project (JCI Kanazawa), Best Fundraising Program (JCI Yokohama), Best Public Relations Program (JCI Nagoya), Best Membership Recruitment Program and Best International Development Program (JCI Osaka). JCI Osaka also won the Best of the Area award, which will provide the members great motivation to work hard in preparation for the upcoming 2010 JCI World Congress in their hometown.
In the individual awards categories, JCI members from Hong Kong stole the show with Jennifer Lam winning Most Outstanding Chapter President, Lydia Chiu winning Most Outstanding Trainer and Shirley Lai winning Most Outstanding Member. JCI Hong Kong and their award winners are looking to the future and preparing for Conferences in years to come.
Looking Forward At the General Assembly, National Presidents and Chief Delegates voted for the location of the 2012 JCI Asia-Pacific Conference. The winning bid came from JCI Hong Kong, who will form a Conference Organizing Committee and begin preparing for 2012. Tentative bid intentions were also recorded for 2013, with JCI Korea expressing interest in holding the event in Gwangju.
Members in Asia and the Pacific now look forward to the 2010 JCI World Congress in Osaka, Japan. After their strong showing at the Asia-Pacific Conference, JCI Osaka and their Congress Organizing Committee are working hard to create a memorable program for JCI members this November.
