The Impact of One
In 2010, President Kwemain challenges every JCI Member to expand our reach through the Impact of One.For more than 60 years, JCI Members have helped their communities be better through targeted programs and projects. As a global organization of young active citizens, our ability to create sustainable, positive change in our communities is tremendous. The breadth of our impact, however, is limited only by our membership.

To continue our strong legacy of service and leadership, JCI must grow to rise to the challenges of our time. That’s why 2010 JCI President Roland Kwemain is traveling to JCI Local and National Organizations across the world to encourage members to expand their impact through the Impact of One project.

Taking Action to Expand our Network
President Kwemain passionately appeals to JCI Members to help expand our influence.

“As JCI Members, it is not enough for us to think or talk about the challenges facing our world,” he said. “We must act in specific, concrete ways. This is why I’m asking every JCI Member to bring one new friend, family member or colleague to JCI this year to help us act to bring positive change to our communities and the world.”

This simple idea of each member bringing another member is the foundation of the Impact of One project. Finding young active citizens interested in joining JCI is as easy as looking at your friends.

While many JCI Members have friends who share the commitment to community improvement and passion for global change, they lack the resources and support network JCI provides to accomplish their desired change. As JCI Members, the duty is upon you to help guide these like-minded active citizens to JCI that we may help them be the change they wish to see in the world, and in doing so, help further the JCI Mission and Vision.

Impact Begins with You
Recruiting new members starts with existing members. As Executive Director of Membership Growth and Development Arrey Obensen says, “Behind every member’s JCI story is another member.”

Try using the following methods to build interest in JCI and help expand our impact:
  • Use Social Networks: How many friends do you have on Facebook, Myspace or Hi5 who may be interested in joining JCI? How many followers on Twitter or connections on LinkedIn? Tweet about an upcoming meeting of your JCI Local Organization and send out invites to your friends and let them see for themselves how they can help give back through membership in JCI.
  • Committing Community Groups: Whether through church groups, youth groups or neighborhood meetings, let every member know of JCI’s efforts for community improvement and how they too can help bring about greater change to the community in which they live or work.
  • Colleagues and Coworkers: Send out a short message to members of your immediate working group about some of the programs your Local Organization is doing and provide them a link to the JCI website where they can learn more about becoming a member and how they can be better by helping those around them.
  • Put the “Fun” in Fundraising: Many JCI Local Organizations are participating in the JCI Nothing But Nets program and hosting event fundraisers to fight malaria. At your next Local Organization meeting, suggest hosting an event to both raise money for sub-Saharan Africa and raise awareness about JCI activities and commitment to positive change, and then invite all your friends!
Membership growth begins with members and ends in global change. If every JCI Member were able to recruit one member, JCI could harness the power of nearly 400,000 members to broaden our impact beyond local projects and individual communities and expand our reach to those most in need of our assistance. That’s the Impact of One. The future of JCI and the effectiveness of its programs and projects rests with you, the member.

How will you impact the world this year?
