JCI Board of Directors Explores the Impact of One
At the January Board Meeting, the Board focused on creating change and impact in 2010.

JCI World Headquarters in Chesterfield, Missouri hosted the first meeting of the year for the 2010 JCI Board of Directors on January 12. The January Board Meeting takes place every year to establish goals and expectations for the forthcoming year and to help equip Board members with tools to create positive change.

In his opening remarks, 2010 JCI President Roland Kwemain spoke about his optimism about the year ahead and his joy in having the opportunity to lead JCI into a new decade of success.

“I hope that the Board of Directors may lead by example and inspire their assigned countries to achieve new levels of success and impact in 2010,” President Kwemain said. “To truly realize the impact of one, we must commit to working with one another to bring in new members and create compelling programs.”

Upcoming Events
After briefly reflecting on the 2009 World Congress in Hammamet, Tunisia, the Board was provided an overview of 2010 events, including Area Conferences and leadership academies. The meeting also featured a look forward to the Congress Organizing Committee Academy in Austria and the candidate cities for the 2011 World Congress.

A delegation from JCI Japan presented information about the JCI Academy in Tsukuba, Omoiyari and the 2010 World Congress in Osaka, Japan. The Board then discussed additional events, including the JCI European Know How Transfer and the JCI Leadership Summit at the UN. Potential locations for events in 2011 and 2012 were also discussed.

  • Singapore – JCI Asia Pacific Conference, June 3 to 6, 2010
  • Rosario, Argentina – JCI Conference of the Americas, April 21 to 24, 2010
  • Aarhus, Denmark – JCI European Conference, June 9 to 12, 2010

Programs and Partners
JCI Executive Director of Growth and Development Arrey Obenson briefed the Board on the status of existing relationships with other international partners including the UN and its agencies, the ICC and AIESEC. The Board discussed the potential for expansion of existing partnerships, especially in relation to the JCI Nothing But Nets program.

Secretary General Edson Kodama reported the JCI World Headquarters’ fundraising efforts throughout 2009 and plans to continue in 2010. As part of the Strategic Planning Committee’s 2008 recommendations, JCI is seeking to reduce dependence on membership dues for operating expenses and is therefore exploring expanded sponsorship and corporate partnership opportunities under the leadership of Secretary General Kodama.

Executive Director Obenson also briefed the Board on the progress of the JCI Nothing But Nets campaign and strategies to achieve the 2015 goal of $10 million. The Board discussed the 2010 Birthday Campaign and President Kwemain called a break to allow the Board to take action and begin fundraising by establishing their own Birthday Campaign pages to allow for donations to be made in their respective names. “I ask you all to take a moment and ensure that you are signed up for the Birthday Campaign, so that we may lead by example and provide ample support for one of our most important programs in 2010,” President Kwemain said.

Optimistic Enthusiasm
The overall feel among attendees at the meeting was one of great optimism for the opportunities to create lasting positive change in 2010. President Kwemain especially was inspired by the enthusiasm of all the members of the Board and their commitment to the programs and events planned for the year.

“I am very proud to be able to lead such a talented, passionate group of people truly invested in being the change they wish to see in their communities and the rest of the world,” raved President Kwemain. “It is so important that the Vice Presidents be the main instrument in implementing the impact we seek to achieve this year, and I have no doubt we will be capable of reaching our goals.”
