Want to Give a Gift on Your Birthday?
JCI Members across the world are devoting their birthdays to eradicating malaria this year through the JCI Nothing But Nets Birthday Campaign.

It’s a new decade and a new opportunity to improve your community and communities across the world. Start a new tradition this year of giving back on your birthday to those who need it most. The JCI Nothing But Nets Birthday Campaign provides an easy way to help others on your big day.

Malaria: The Facts
In Sub-Saharan Africa, malaria is the largest single cause of death among children under the age of five, killing one child every 30 seconds, more than 800,000 per year. Malaria alone accounts for 40 percent of public health expenditures.

Insecticide-treated bed nets are a form of personal protection that has repeatedly been shown to reduce severe disease and mortality due to malaria in endemic regions. Studies have shown that use of insecticide-treated bed nets can reduce transmission as much as 90% in areas with high coverage rates.

The JCI Nothing But Nets Birthday Campaign
Since 2008, JCI has been committed to raising awareness of the Nothing But Nets project, which provides insecticide-treated bed nets to affected areas, and has committed to providing one million bed nets by 2015. To reach this ambitious goal and contribute to the eradication of malaria in Africa, JCI is asking you to forego typical birthday presents this year and put bed nets on your birthday list.

One of the first JCI birthdays this year belongs to the 2010 JCI Executive Vice President Bertolt Daems, who is using his birthday to raise nets. He established a goal of 365 nets – one for each day of the year – or $3,650. Daems is already a quarter of the way to his goal and is sending out the message to fellow members, friends and family throughout the Netherlands and across the globe.

All of the funds raised not only go to a great cause, but help celebrate your birthday and are given in your honor.

Many Local Organizations have already found innovative ways to drive support for JCI Nothing But Nets, including JCI Dublin’s running of the Dublin marathon to JCI Netherlands’ partnering with Cordaid to match funds contributed by JCI Netherlands members. Collaborating with fellow members of Local and National Organizations also brought in increased funds for JCI Canada, whose National President starred as a hockey goalie in a team-building exercise, which also raised money for JCI Nothing But Nets.

Julia and Mike Goodfellow-Smith of JCI Leeds requested donations instead of presents for their wedding in September 2009. Through their wedding gifts, the couple donated $600 to JCI Nothing But Nets.

Be creative, work towards a wonderful cause and make your special day in 2010 special for others too. Learn more about JCI Nothing But Nets.
