Through a new Memorandum of Understanding, JCI will join with UNESCO in developing youth-focused training programs.
JCI and UNESCO are strengthening their global partnership through a series of joint training programs, thanks to a new Memorandum of Understanding signed February 18 in Paris by UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura, 2009 JCI President Jun Sup Shin and JCI Secretary General Edson A. Kodama.
Through the Memorandum of Understanding, JCI will develop capacity-building training courses for UNESCO to empower 15- to 20-year-olds who lack opportunities in their lives.
JCI Trainers will have the opportunity to build their skills by giving these courses at regional and local UNESCO events, including the UNESCO Youth Regional Forums, in addition to JCI events.
The courses will focus on topics such as youth entrepreneurship, young leaders, organizational skills, team building, active citizenship, people skills, including presentation and speaking skills, and decision making. Later on, the courses will include the development of a joint UNESCO-JCI training course that aims to promote youth leadership, multi-cultural leadership, tolerance, culture for peace and youth migration.
“I am so glad we have built up official relationships with strong organizations like UNESCO,” President Shin said. “And I look forward to strengthening our collaboration, especially though the UNESCO-JCI training program. There were so many people from UNESCO at the meeting, I ran out of my business card. This is a really good sign of UNESCO’s enthusiasm to partner with JCI.”
As he welcomed President Shin and Secretary General Kodama, Director-General Matsuura emphasized youth as a priority in UNESCO’s activities and reaffirmed, the importance of capacity building to enable young people to participate fully in the development of their society.
This agreement marks a new chapter in the distinguished 15-year history between JCI and UNESCO. JCI has maintained working “operational relations” with UNESCO since 1996. JCI contributes to achieving UNESCO's goal of promoting cooperation among its 193 Member States and 6 Associate Members in the fields of education, science, culture and communication. JCI Local and National Organizations collaborate with UNESCO in many ways, including participating in the NGO International Conference and theme-specific collective and regional consultations.
Director-General Matsuura also expressed his satisfaction with the participation of JCI representatives in UNESCO’s Youth Forum in 2007, and expressed his hope in JCI’s active participation in the 6th Youth Forum in October 2009 during the 35th session of UNESCO’s General Conference.
