Following a careful process, four TOYP judges completed the task of selecting the 10 winners of the 2008 Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) of the World Program. The task was difficult because all nominees are exceptional young people. The fact that they were nominated for the TOYP award is, by itself, a recognition of their accomplishments.

Through the TOYP program, JCI formally recognizes young individuals who excel in their chosen fields and exemplify the best attributes of the world’s youth. You will have the opportunity to meet the 10 honorees at the TOYP Ceremony on November 5, 2008, during the 2008 JCI World Congress in New Delhi, India.

Honorees selected in past years have represented the heights of progress in numerous human endeavors. Many have gone on to even greater achievements. All have continued to serve humanity in a variety of ways.

The Judging

In 2008, JCI received a total of 126 entries for the TOYP program from 46 national organizations and countries. The entries were all carefully evaluated by the judges.

The four judges who evaluated entries for The Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP) competition in 2008 are François Compaoré, Special Advisor to His Excellency, the President of Burkina Faso; Robert A. Fischer, Executive Director of the World Affairs Council of St. Louis; Graham Hanlon, JCI World President; and Timothy E. Wirth, President of the United Nations Foundation and Better World Fund.

Judges felt their role was arduous because the nominees were all amazing young people. Many of them had been selected as outstanding individuals, first at the local level and then at the national level.

The Winners

The judges had to choose, however, the ten young people that best exemplify the optimum qualities of today’s youth. They selected the following young individuals as winners:

Mayya Assaad (Syria), Contribution to children, world peace, and/or human rights
Dr. Angelin An-Lin Chang (Taiwan), Cultural achievement
Garrett Gravesen (USA), Contribution to children, world peace and/or human rights
Dr. Lisa E. Hensley (USA), Scientific and/or technological development
Tania Major (Australia), Political, legal and/or governmental affairs
Melissa Moon (New Zealand), Personal improvement and/or accomplishment
Dr. Sam Prince (Australia), Humanitarian and/or voluntary leadership
Dr. Pascal Saffache (France), Moral and/or environmental leadership
Governor Luis Villafuerte Jr. (Philippines), Business, economic and/or entrepreneurial accomplishment
M. Yan Wai Kiu (Hong Kong), Personal improvement and/or accomplishment

By recognizing these young people, JCI will encourage them and others to continue seeking excellence and serving others. Thus, JCI contributes to prepare better leaders, who will create better societies.

The TOYP Ceremony in New Delhi will highlight each winner’s career in narrative form and provide a stage from which the honorees will inspire young people from around the world. For each honoree, there will be a video presentation profiling his or her accomplishments, followed by the trophy presentation and an acceptance speech.

We look forward to meeting you at the 2008 TOYP ceremony in New Delhi, India!
