On April 3, in the Salón Pacífico of the Europa Hotel, JCI Bolivia signed an agreement with the Bolivian Corporation on Corporate Social Responsibility (COBORSE), a UN Global Compact Network in Bolivia. Both organizations agreed to collaborate in various activities to promote Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
JCI World President Graham Hanlon and recently elected COBORSE President Eduardo Peinado were present at the signing of the agreement. Hanlon provided information on JCI and Peinado on COBORSE. “Our President Graham Hanlon congratulated us for being the first National Organization to sign an agreement of this kind,” reported JCI Bolivia President Lenny Garvizu G.
Activities planned to implement the agreement include organizing a contest to promote research and knowledge of CSR at the university level, developing activities to promote CSR among teachers and JCI instructors, and promoting the UN Global Compact in Bolivia.
What is CSR?
Corporate and Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept that encourages companies to integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and in their interactions with their stakeholders on a voluntary basis.
CSR seeks to create prosperity, support social cohesion and preserve a healthy environment. It promotes economic, social and ethical responsibility, as well as the market economy.
Specifically, CSR encourages voluntary actions that businesses can take, over and above compliance with minimum legal requirements, to address both their own competitive interests and the interests of society at large.
What is the UN Global Compact?
The Global Compact is a framework for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption. As the world's largest, global corporate citizenship initiative, the Global Compact’s goal is to build social legitimacy of businesses and markets.
Business, trade and investment are essential pillars for prosperity and peace. But in many areas, business is too often linked with exploitative practices that discourage innovation and entrepreneurship. Responsible business practices can help build trust and social capital, contributing to broad-based development and sustainable markets.
How did JCI become involved?
At the JCI World Congress in Vienna, Austria, in October 2005, JCI officers and several high-ranking political and business representatives signed the “Vienna Treaty," which sets out Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a principle for conducting business. Thus, JCI began worldwide efforts to promote CSR.
In January 2008, a JCI-UN Global Compact Cooperation Agreement was signed. JCI encouraged its national organizations to work with UN Global Compact’s local networks in promoting practical and effective international principles and standards to help harness the power of the business sector and other sectors in responding to the challenges and opportunities of globalization.
As a result of JCI Vice President Ivette Cáceres’ visit to Bolivia earlier this year, the agreement between JCI and COBORSE was planned and later signed. This agreement is the first between a JCI national organization and a local Global Compact network.
