Australia's Matthew Albert Selected as a TOYP Honoree

A distinguished jury selected Matthew Albert in the category "Contribution to Children, World Peace and/or Human Rights." On October 25, he will be honored at The Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP) Ceremony during the JCI World Congress in Vienna, Austria.

Matthew Albert was born in 1980. He was educated in Australia, Japan and China. Albert now works as a lawyer and volunteers as the founder and director of two refugee support organizations. In 2000, Albert co-founded the SAIL (Sudanese Australian Integrated Learning) Program, a non-profit, secular, volunteer-run organization. The SAIL Program provides free community services including tutoring, home help, camps and excursions. More than 500 Sudanese refugees attend the SAIL Program at three campuses across Melbourne every week.

In 2002, Albert founded SORA, the Sudanese Online Research Association. SORA aims to share knowledge and understanding about the needs of one of the world’s largest refugee communities and Australia’s fastest growing ethnic community — the Sudanese refugee community. Like most of Albert's voluntary work, the SORA and SAIL websites raise awareness globally, in academic and wider circles, about the hopes, struggles and realities of Sudanese people living outside Sudan. The United Nations Peace Education Program is an official SORA partner.

In 2004, Albert was a Legal Intern in the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Kenya. Photographs taken during his time in Kenya and Sudan are regularly published and are presently touring Australia as an exhibition.

Albert is recognized as a mentor, an advocate, a researcher, a journalist, a photojournalist and a lobbyist.

Albert is a very humble young man who is engaged in work about which he is passionate. He will continue to contribute to the local, national and international community into the future as he assists those who are temporarily unable to speak up for themselves.
