Go for the Goals on JCI Active Citizen Day

What are you and your fellow members doing to advance the UN Millennium Development Goals (UN MDGs) on JCI Active Citizen Day?

For more than half a century, members of our organization have celebrated the achievements of JCI every December 11, and this year JCI National Organizations committed to commemorating the day by launching new projects related to the UN MDGs in many JCI Local Organizations.

A Look Back

On December 11, 1944, 30 young active citizens from eight countries – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and the United States – met in Mexico City to sign a declaration that led to the establishment of Junior Chamber International. In the wake of the Second World War, leading active citizens from these countries recognized that young people working for mutual understanding could prevent future atrocities like those seen during the war and build a better world. JCI members soon established JCI Day as a way to commemorate that historic meeting and renew our commitment to creating positive change.

Throughout the years, JCI members have taken the opportunity of JCI Day, now JCI Active Citizen Day, to organize projects in their communities. Now, 67 years later, JCI members continue to serve their communities by creating sustainable change and expanding JCI’s global impact.

Taking Action

At the 2011 JCI Global Partnership Summit, each JCI National Organization committed to conducting a needs-based project to advance a UN MDG in their country. Many National Organizations reported their plans at the 2011 JCI World Congress in Brussels, Belgium. There is still time to announce your project before the big day. Report your UN MDG-based project, to be launched on December 11, to Secretary General Edson Kodama and be sure to upload the results of your project in the JCI Project Gallery after completion.

Support your JCI National President as they illustrate your country’s commitment to the Summit Resolution. Mobilize your fellow members to act on the selected project and start the journey toward sustainable change.

JCI Active Citizen Day is a day to commemorate the past, present and future of JCI. On this day, JCI members worldwide will stand up and take new steps toward building a better world.

What will you do for JCI Active Citizen Day this year? How will you celebrate and unite with other JCI members in your community and around the world? How will you carry on the legacy of 67 years of positive global change?  Share your plans for JCI Active Citizen Day on the JCI Facebook page

Don't forget to report your National Project to JCI Secretary General Edson Kodama

Promote the UN MDGs in your Organization with the JCI MDG posters, icons and bookmark.
