2010 JCI TOYP: Recognizing Great Achievement from Young Active Citizens

Through inspiring accomplishment and innovation the 2010 JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World are leading by example and creating positive change across the globe.

JCI (Junior Chamber International) honors ten outstanding young people under the age of 40 each year. These individuals exemplify the spirit of the JCI Mission and provide extraordinary service to their communities. Whether through service, innovation, determination or revolutionary thinking, these young active citizens create positive impact in their communities. Get to know the 2010 JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (JCI TOYP).

Emily Cummins, United Kingdom
Business, Economic and/or Entrepreneurial Accomplishment
From a toothpaste dispenser to a multi-bracket water carrier, Cummins has illustrated her passion for innovation and sustainable design. Her experience culminated in a sustainable refrigerator, which allows for the safe, uncontaminated transport of items like medicine regardless of the local water quality.

Melanie Hennessy, Ireland
Humanitarian and/or Voluntary Leadership
After a trip to Nepal when she was 18, Hennessy devoted her career to generating awareness of the plight of children in Nepal. Together with a local businessman and philanthropist, Hennessy established TEAM Nepal and embarked on a mission to raise €40,000 for the construction of a health center for Nepalese orphans.

Dr. Gifty Immanuel, India
Medical Innovation
After volunteering to identify and manage an outbreak of the Bubonic Plague in India with the Department of Community Medicine, Immanuel began a long career studying and treating infectious diseases and epidemics. In 1996, Immanuel was able to establish the Center for AIDS & Antiviral Research at Tuticorin, India.

Eva Maria Ingelsson, Sweden
Political, Legal and/or Governmental Affairs
Specializing in real estate law and litigation, Ingelsson is providing free legal service for several projects in support of start-up companies. In 2006, she initiated a program with her law firm designed for young female attorneys to help increase competence and build a professional network for participants. Ingelsson also lectures on legal issues, entrepreneurship and maintaining a positive work-life balance.

Sabirul Islam, United Kingdom
Business, Economic and/or Entrepreneurial Accomplishment
After beginning to trade part-time on the London Stock Exchange at age 16, Islam published his first book, “The World at Your Feet – Turning Your Vision into Reality,” to inspire young people by harnessing each individuals’ intensity, integrity and intelligence. Islam has since developed three additional books, an audio CD and workbook.

Aki Nakaoka, Japan
Humanitarian and/or Voluntary Leadership
After being diagnosed with Distal Myopathy, an extremely rare condition causing muscle weakening, Nakaoka started a support group for fellow sufferers. Following this group, she co-established the Supporting Organization for Patients with Rare Diseases. Nakaoka also founded the “freexFree” project, importing products and ideas from Europe to help individuals suffering from rare illnesses lead happier lives.

Uyapo Ndadi, Botswana
Contribution to Children, World Peace and/or Human Rights
Leaving behind a lucrative job at a law firm, Ndadi committed to making a meaningful change by founding the Botswana Network on Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS (BONELA). Ndadi was recently appointed the Director of BONELA and continues to fight for the rights of HIV/AIDS sufferers and to curbing the spread of the virus.

Dr. Joseph Nkurunziza, Rwanda
Contribution to Children, World Peace and/or Human Rights
After earning his medical degree, Nkurunziza co-founded the Health Development Initiative (HDI), an advocacy organization working to provide access to proper health care in disadvantaged communities. Nkurunziza and HDI lobby government officials, mobilize support among civil society groups and coalitions and engage members of East African communities.

Antti Yrjänä Pentikäinen, Finland
Contribution to Children, World Peace and/or Human Rights
After establishing the Crisis Management Initiative with former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari, Pentikäinen was appointed the Executive Director of Finn Church Aid (FCA), the largest development organization in Finland. Under his leadership, FCA has been active in advocating peace and performing human rights work through fundraising and humanitarian programs.

Dr. Mikko Waldemar Wirén, Finland
Business, Economic and/or Entrepreneurial Accomplishment
Wirén is the managing director of Pihlajalinna Oy, one of the fastest growing companies in Finland, employing nearly 300 people. The mission of the company is to create new, more efficient methods to provide quality health care services to patients as well as providing employees a rewarding work environment. He has been a member of JCI Tampere since 2001.
