Formal Relations

United Nations
http://www.un.org/

Since 1954, JCI has enjoyed a Special Consultative Status with UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), responsible for promoting higher standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress; identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems; facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Working in collaboration with the UN, JCI has held several JCI Summits at UN in New York. These Summits have helped JCI members learn about the UN and its projects, including those related with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). JCI members worldwide are contributing to achieve those MDGs. The UN is led by the UN Secretary-General , who is appointed by the General Assembly.

JCI is also affiliated with the NGO Section of the UN Department of Public Information (DPI). It serves as the liaison between the Department and NGOs associated with DPI. JCI helps disseminate information about the UN, thereby building knowledge of and support for the Organization at the grassroots level.

As an accredited NGO with special consultative status, JCI and its members are allowed to attend relevant international conferences convened by the UN and the meetings of the preparatory bodies of the said conferences as well as Committees. In addition, JCI has privileges such as:

a) Able to consult with officers from the UN Secretariat on matters of interest to the NGO;

b) Allowed to make oral statements based on recommendations by the Committee (or Commission);

c) Allowed to submit brief written statements; and

d) May designate representatives to sit at meetings of ECOSOC and its subsidiaries

JCI Local/National Organizations are entitled to participate in the conferences and Committees under the coordination of the JCI WHQ.

UN Global Compact
http://www.unglobalcompact.org

The UN Global Compact is a framework for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption . As the world's largest, global corporate citizenship initiative, the Global Compact is first and foremost concerned with exhibiting and building the social legitimacy of business and markets. It has two objectives:

a) Mainstream the ten principles in business activities around the world; and,

b) Catalyze actions in support of broader UN goals such as the MDGs.

To achieve these objectives, the Global Compact offers facilitation and engagement through several mechanisms: Policy Dialogues, Learning, Local Networks, and Partnership Projects

In 2008, JCI passed a “Commitment to Action to Advance CSR Through the UN Global Compact”.

Based on it, on January 9, 2008, the UN Global Compact and JCI signed a Memorandum of Understanding. As per the agreement, the UN Global Compact is committed to supporting JCI at its Summit in the UN in July 2008, and to promote cooperation between its Local Networks and JCI National Organizations.

As part of its commitment to the UN Global Compact, JCI will develop a guide for engagement of small-and-medium enterprises/entrepreneurs on the issues of corporate citizenship and Global Compact. In addition and as per the 2008 JCI Commitment, JCI will create a “Recognition Program” to grant a “JCI Seal of Approval’ for companies that best embody the CSR concept.

As a result, JCI Local/National Organizations and UN Global Compact Local Networks are encouraged to work together in order to further its projects. The list of the contacts of the UN GC Local Networks is posted on the right side of the screen.

UN Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization
http://www.unesco.org

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and JCI have had working "operational relations" since 1996. JCI contributes to achieve UNESCO's goal of promoting cooperation among its 193 Member States and 6 Associate Members in the fields of education, science, culture and communication.

Relations between UNESCO and NGOs are essentially intellectual and moral. They take different forms:

a) Exchange of information and documentation on questions of common interest. Consultations on draft programs;

b) Participation in sessions of the General Conference, in certain UNESCO meetings and in periodic International Conferences of Non-Governmental Organizations (organized by NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee);

c) Different forms of moral support, on the basis of express request and authorization; and,

d) Consultancies and participation of program specialists, experts or lecturers in events of interest to UNESCO.

However, cooperation with UNESCO can also have financial and material aspects:

a)Contracts ;

b) Financial contributions;

c) Availability of administrative office space;

d) Use of conference rooms and equipment; and,

e) Miscellaneous services.

JCI maintains with UNESCO the status of “Operational Relations” (established in response to the need to extend cooperation between UNESCO and JCI and to back up JCI’s efforts to achieve a more active presence in the field. Operational relations are aimed at achieving a flexible and dynamic partnership in the implementation of UNESCO's programs).

How can JCI Local/National Organizations work with UNESCO? Through:

a) The NGO International Conference, which takes place every two years and comprises all NGOs maintaining official relations with UNESCO;

b) Theme-specific collective consultations, organized regularly in accordance with UNESCO program implementation needs, sometimes in parallel with international conferences held under its auspices;

c) Regional consultations, held at regular intervals in the different regions, with a view to examining the state of cooperation with UNESCO, discussing the programs of the Organization and regional priorities and promoting the development of regional cooperative networks.

The NGO-UNESCO Liaison Committee, elected by the NGO International Conference, is responsible for permanent coordination and continuity of this collective cooperation. It is based at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

In 2009, JCI signed a MoU to develop training programs for youth on topics of mutual interest such as intercultural and interfaith dialogue, youth leadership, youth participation adn youth entrepreneurship. These training seminars will be delivered by JCI Trainers at regional and local UNESCO events in addition to JCI events.

International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and World Chambers Federation
http://www.iccwbo.org

On March 4, 2004, 20 years after the signing of a partnership agreement with the ICC-WCF, JCI renewed this agreement.

ICC is the voice of world business championing the global economy as a force for economic growth, job creation and prosperity. And the World Chambers Federation (WCF) is the ICC's specialized division for its Chamber of Commerce members worldwide. JCI and ICC-WCF are actively cooperating with in various areas and their cooperation is proving to be mutually beneficial.

At present, ICC and JCI have been working to make the ICC Global Business Exchange (GBX) available to JCI members.

GBX is a simple-to-use, world-wide electronic business opportunities database of products and services. This service helps companies find suppliers, business partners, investors, business opportunities, agents, distributors and joint ventures, promoting their business opportunities or requirements via chambers of commerce and their member companies.

In addition, ICC and JCI have been working with ICC regarding the JCI Best Business Plan (BBP), according to which ICC has adopted with unanimity to run it. The new focus of the JCI BBP is to make positive changes in the community by encouraging JCI Local Organizations to run the BBP in cooperation with local Chambers of Commerce.

Information on both joint projects will be announced soon.

United Nations Foundation
http://www.unfoundation.org/

Mission:

The UN Foundation was created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner’s historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes and activities.

The UN Foundation builds and implements public-private partnerships to address the world’s most pressing problems, and broadens support for the UN through advocacy and public outreach. The UN Foundation is a public charity.

Activities:

The UN Foundation strengthens and supports the UN and its causes through a blend of advocacy, grantmaking, and partnerships. Wherever possible, we align these core organizational assets behind the large-scale problems we address.

Advocacy. From the outset, we have worked to strengthen the relationship between the UN and the U.S. government—with a focus on getting Congress to clear up billions of dollars in arrears owed by the U.S. to the UN, and on continuing to pay our dues on time and in full. This effort—led by the UN Foundation’s sister organization, the Better World Fund—built the base for broader public outreach campaigns about the importance of international cooperation and a strong U.S.–UN relationship.

Grantmaking. Since our inception in 1998, the UN Foundation and Better World Fund have awarded grants amounting to over $900 million—including nearly $400 million in funds from dozens of partners and thousands of grassroots donors—in support of UN projects and activities in 115 countries.

Partnerships. The UN Foundation makes it easy to engage in the work of the UN. As a platform for partnering with the UN, we help corporations, foundations, governments, and individuals make a difference in the important work the UN does across a broad range of issues. Our role in these partnerships varies—from catalyst to convener, advocate to grantmaker, fiduciary to fundraising ally—but in each case, we are able to achieve an outcome that is greater than what any single actor would have accomplished working alone. These efforts are conducted in close coordination with the United Nations Fund for International Partnerships (UNFIP), our strategic counterpoint within the UN system.
